Campello (Umbria)

Campello is a little Umbrian city formed by two villages called
Campello alto and Campello basso, situated between Spoelto and Trevi. Campello
alto is a fortified village developed around an ancient Castle, dating back
to 925 a.c. It preserves the defensive walls and the Romanic church of S.
Donato. This village is at 514 m of altitude, surrounded by olive trees,
while Campello basso is on the Flaminia road. The main historical buildings
are the “Chiesa della Madonna della Bianca”, built in XVI century and containing
decoration of Valadier and frescoes by Lo Spagna and Fabio Angelucci, the
Fonti del Clitunno (Springs of Clitumnus) and the Tempietto del Clitunno.
The Fonti del Clitunno is a natural spring, were water emerges from rocks
and spreads out in shallow pools, surrounded by a beautiful vegetation.
This place was sacred to Romans and there were many temples and thermal
baths in the area. Here painters and poets such as Propertius, Virgil and
Pliny the Younger, use to get inspired for their works. Not far from here
there’s the Tempietto of S. Salvatore, built with recovery materials of
roman buildings, still preserving the most ancient sacred frescoes in Umbria,
dating back to the VII century.
As regards the gastronomy of Campello, the typical plate you can taste in
local restaurants is the trout and the crayfish. In one of Fonti del Clitunno’s
lakes is possible practise trout fishing.
